What to Expect at Your First Walking Football Session

Share Post:

Starting something new can feel daunting — especially if you haven’t played football for a while. At Blackpool Senior Seasiders, we make sure every new player feels welcome, comfortable, and supported from the moment they arrive.

Whether you are a man or a woman, a former footballer or a complete beginner, walking football is about enjoyment, fitness, and community — not pressure or competition.

Our Tuesday Sessions are at 4-5pm, and our Friday Sessions are at 1-2pm,  at Common Edge Community Sports Village.

A Friendly Welcome

When you arrive at your first session, you will be greeted by our players and organisers, who are always happy to introduce themselves and help you settle in. There is no registration stress, no trial atmosphere, and no judgement — just friendly faces and encouragement.

Many of our members were nervous before their first session too, so you will never be the only newcomer.

What You Should Wear

You don’t need any special equipment to start:

  • Comfortable sports clothing

  • Trainers suitable for an outdoor astroturf 3G pitch

  • Shinpads (we can provide those if needed)
  • A bottle of water

That’s it. No expensive kit required.

What the Session Is Like

Sessions usually begin with a gentle warm-up, followed by small-sided games. The pace is controlled, with walking football rules applied by one of our referees, so that everyone can play safely and comfortably.

There is no running, no sliding tackles, and no physical contact. The emphasis is on:

  • Enjoyment

  • Teamwork

  • Confidence

  • Staying active

You can join in as much or as little as you feel comfortable — many people build their confidence gradually.

For Men and Women

Our sessions are open to both men and women, and we welcome players of all abilities. Some members are very experienced footballers, while others are trying football for the first time later in life.

Everyone plays together with respect, encouragement, and good humour.

Fitness Without Pressure

Walking football is a fantastic way to:

  • Improve fitness and mobility

  • Stay active after injury or illness

  • Boost mental wellbeing

  • Meet new people

  • Enjoy football again

There is no expectation to perform — just to enjoy yourself.

Many of our members have reported losing weight, lowering blood pressure, and generally ‘feeling better’ after just a few months of regular walking football.

You Won’t Be Left Out

We make sure new players are included straight away. You won’t be left standing on the side or made to feel awkward. Teams are mixed regularly, and everyone is encouraged to get involved.

After the Session

Most players stay for a chat after the session along with a hot drink and a variety of biscuits provided by the club. Friendships form quickly, and many members say the social side is just as important as the football.

Our members also regularly get together for golf and padel, and take part in some legendary away trips, including tournaments in Spain and Scotland.

Your First Step

If you are thinking about trying walking football in Blackpool, the best advice is simple:

Just come along and give it a go.

You don’t have to commit to anything — just try one session and see how it feels.
