We often talk about walking football being for over 50s, 60s and 65s — but the truth is, some of the most inspiring players on the pitch at our club are well into their 70s and even 80s. Several have even represented their country in international walking football.
And they’re not just turning up — they’re playing, passing, laughing, and fully involved in the games every single week.
Blackpool Senior Seasiders also field teams in competitive Over 70s and Over 75s regional leagues, showing that the game can still be played at a high level well into later life.
Check out our latest Friday Walking Football Recreational Session.
Football Doesn’t Have an Expiry Date
For many of our older players, football has been part of their lives for decades. Walking football gives them the chance to stay connected to the game they love — without the pace or physical demands of traditional football.
- It’s not about competing at the highest level
- It’s about staying involved
And that matters more than ever.

A Game That Adapts to the Player
One of the strengths of walking football is its flexibility. At our recreational sessions, we make simple adjustments to ensure everyone can enjoy the game safely and comfortably.
- The younger competition-level players play 3-touch football
- The tempo is kept under control
- Players are encouraged to give older members time on the ball
- Physical contact is kept to a minimum
These small adjustments make a huge difference.
They allow players in their 70s and 80s to stay active, contribute to the game, and most importantly — feel included.
Respect on the Pitch
There’s an unspoken understanding during our sessions.
When an older player receives the ball, the game naturally slows. Teammates and opponents alike show respect — not by stepping aside, but by allowing space and time.
- It’s still football
- Still competitive
- Still enjoyable
Just played the right way.
More Than Just Exercise
For many of our older members, walking football is about much more than fitness.
It’s about:
- Getting out of the house
- Seeing familiar faces
- The joy of nutmegging or tackling someone 20 or 30 years younger
- Being blown for ‘running’ at their age
- Being part of a team
- Having something to look forward to each week
The social side of the game is just as important as the physical benefits. After our sessions, we enjoy a cuppa and a biscuit in our Community Room, debating the day’s hot topics.
And for some, it’s the highlight of the week.
Inspiring the Whole Club
Our over-70s and over-80s players set the standard for everyone else.
They show that:
- You can keep playing longer than you think
- Staying active doesn’t have to stop with age
- Football is truly for life
Younger players in the club often say the same thing — seeing these lads still playing is what keeps them coming back.
