With Fleetwood refusing to blink at the top of the Dome League, the Seasiders knew only one thing would do here – win, and win well. Every goal mattered, and with two BSS debutants thrown into the mix, there was plenty of intrigue before a ball was even kicked.
From the off, it was all Blackpool. BSS camped themselves firmly in Garstang territory, pitching a tent and putting the kettle on. The pressure finally told when Chris Moody unleashed an absolute 15-yard thunderbolt, giving the keeper no chance and the net no mercy.
BSS continued to turn the screw and really should have been further ahead before Bobby decided enough was enough, smashing one into the top corner from close range – a finish that left the keeper rooted and the Seasiders cruising. 2–0 at half-time, and looking comfortable.
The second half picked up exactly where the first left off. Ian Stewart showed his class, coolly finessing home the third to make it 3–0 and seemingly put the game to bed. Both goalkeepers then decided it was time to show off, pulling off some excellent saves at either end, but a loose ball and a moment of stand-off defending gifted Garstang a route back into the game. 3–1, and a slight wobble.
Chances came and went for both sides before Big Joe found himself clean through, one-on-one with the keeper. Some say he’s got ice running through his veins – and he proved it, calmly slotting home to restore the three-goal cushion at 4–1.
The final 15 minutes were… interesting. A very dubious DOGSO penalty was awarded (we’ll leave that one to the lawyers), which Garstang converted to make it 4–2, adding a touch of late-game drama that probably wasn’t needed.
Full Time: BSS 4 – 2 Garstang
All in all, a much-needed win that keeps the pressure firmly on Fleetwood, who remain top after a 5–3 win over Blackburn. The chase continues – and the Seasiders aren’t going away quietly.
